Sophia Bush confirms ‘One Tree Hill’ co-star who warned her about Chad Michael Murray: ‘Don’t date him’
Sophia Bush confirmed “One Tree Hill” co-star Hilarie Burton once warned her against dating their co-star, Chad Michael Murray.
The actress, now 44, appeared on Wednesday’s episode of Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast, telling Cooper that Burton and Murray — to whom Bush was briefly married in 2005 — had “worked together on another show” and that it “wasn’t a great experience” for Burton.
Burton — whom Cooper pointed out was “one of” Bush’s “closest friends on set” — stated that Burton had “explicitly” told Bush, “do not date [Murray].”
Bush admitted, “You know, it was good advice,” and that she “just didn’t have the wherewithal or the experience” to heed Burton’s warning.
Bush and Murray, both 23 at the time wed in a romantic oceanfront ceremony in Santa Monica, California, in April 2005 — and separated just five months later, finalizing their divorce in December 2006.
At the time, cheating speculation abounded — which Bush addresses in her upcoming memoir, “And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress.”
The actress quipped, “My friends used to joke, like ‘look up gullible in the dictionary and you’ll see [Bush’s] face.’”
Cooper also wondered aloud whether her friendship with Burton had cooled after her romance with Murray.
“For years, I thought that’s why we stopped being two peas in a pod,” Bush recalled, noting that she “felt so much shame.”
“She was right,” Bush said, adding, “about who he was then.” She joked that the “trolls” would “have a field day” over the comments and insisted it’s “all good” now.
Bush said the “distance” between the pals likely resulted because “I didn’t listen. She was right.”
During the interview, Bush also revealed she’d befriended women Murray allegedly cheated on her with during their relationship.
“I wrote about some of the friendships I made with women who I think the world would probably think I would never speak to, that I really cherish,” she said in her upcoming memoir.
“And frankly, when I look at the landscape, I’m like badass, badass, badass, badass,” she went on.
“You did have great taste, bro, and like, congrats, you crushed. I’m like, ‘I get it.’ I’m just like, ‘Damn.’ Like, in a lineup, I’d take any one of us.”
Bush shared that the friendships are viable because they’re “completely different people from who we were [then].”
Reps for Murray and Burton did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment on Wednesday evening.
Bush previously said she harbors no “ill will” for her ex-husband, during a 2021 podcast interview and noted she wouldn’t “talk about him.”
“I’m not allowed to because I’ve tried to poke fun at being a dumb kid and whenever I’ve done that, it gets twisted into [that] I’m talking s–t about somebody who I don’t even know anymore, who’s clearly a grown-up,” she said at the time.
Murray went on to wed Sarah Roemer, with whom he shares three children, in 2015. Bush, meanwhile, married soccer star Ashlyn Harris after divorcing Grant Hughes in 2023.
